It seems that nothing much has been going on, or at least nothing much that I have felt like writing about, so more reading updates are the order of the day.
There are a lot of books that have been on my "current" list for a long time, longer than usual it seems:
Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes is currently on hold, not because it is not fascinating, nor because it is tough going, which it really isn't, although it is a slow read. It is mostly on hold because it is a book which I need at least reasonably long stretches of uninterrupted time to really absorb and those have been in short supply for some time now. I will get back to it. If I am mentally up to the challenge, I am hoping it will be my bedtime reading while G is in he hospital following minor surgery the end of this week. If not, it may be put off again, but I am hoping that after the worry of the hospital is gone, G will settle down again and there might be time.
This same kind of scatter-brained daily life has interrupted my reading of John Adams as well. I also made the mistake of listening to this book as an audiobook which takes many hours longer than actually reading it would, and listening is far less conducive to interruption. Although I used to listen to books while I knitted, weeded, or worked on other mindless things, at the moment that also is not going well due to the very short time between interruptions at the moment. This book is also on hold, although I may just request a copy from the library in order to finish the book. I am about 3/4 through the book right now and it will not take long to finish. I really want to finish; it is a fascinating biography.
A similar situation happened with John McPhee's Assembling California. This one I had on the Kindle which is fine as I usually have many opportunities to read the Kindle. But G recently discovered the Kindle, 3 years after I bought it for him and he rejected it. Now it is usually in his hands, which is good as I am happy he is finding something that makes reading easier, but bad for me as I have come to use it so frequently. If he keeps this up, I will simply get another Kindle as I can't imagine not having it at this point.
In the meantime, I did manage to finish Assembling California by sneaking off with it early in the mornings while I rode the exercise bike. Fascinating book. Reading this book makes me wonder why I found geology so boring when I was in public school. Now, despite all the science, it was hard to put this book down. I must read more in this geology series.
Aside from the hoped for reading of Taubes, reading matter will generally remain on the light side for at least the next week.
I am strangely intrigued by "Assembling California" as I am not a geology lover. Hmmm...
I really enjoyed Taubes book. I found the science in it to go against everything I had ever learned about nutrition. ANd in having all that questioned I felt this kind of "what else is held as true but isn't" kind of existential dread. I didn't expect to have a book on nutrition impact me like that.

So interesting that you've become that used to the Kindle in three years -- I'm not tempted so far, still loving the feel of real books and concerned about issues of licensing, distribution, etc., with digital ones. But keeping an open mind, especially when it comes to travel when the weight of books is a real issue. And obviously, it's not an either/or proposition.
